Fox is a double offsite transfer from the airport. Plan accordingly. Car is assigned, you pick from a section. Go over your rental with a fine toothed comb so you don’t get dinged on the dings. Staff is friendly and helpful, but there’s lots of upsell pressure.

Do not get persuaded that car rental companies in Las Vegas do not accept international / out of state insurance and liability insurance. These companies have a new tactic to scam you by telling you that this is their policy and is unchanged. Then you are forced to pay however much amount they set because you already took the shuttle to their counter. YOU CAN TAKE THE SHUTTLE BACK TO MCCARRAN CAR RENTAL CENTER and find a more honest rental company by being quoted in person. That is what we did and Sixt saved our trip.

I got on one highway to go downtown from vibesdiystudio that had me on the wrong side of the street, with cars going the opposite direction on the wrong side than I'm use to. It was clear on how to enter, there was concrete barricades for safety, but mentally weird. Maybe one because I'm not use to it

Freeways are a little tricky and get super busy at night. I would recommend driving within the speed limit to avoid any sudden maneuvers. Otherwise the streets are wide but also follow speed limit to avoid getting ticketed.

You will need to take a second shuttle to certain car rental companies to get your car so be prepared for that if you’re arriving later in the evening. I also think that the little reflective tabs on the road are not quite as nice as painted stripes so it may take a bit to get use to them. If you are in a rush to get to a show don’t drive the strip in the evening 👍🏼

I felt like I was being discriminated. Since I got there I asked the employee if he had any car is available. The employer response we are all sold out. Then I checked on the garage there was a couple of them. I asked him if he could let me rent one of them and he’s like yeah and he gave me a very high price! He knew we wasn’t going to say no to that price! 250$ a day!!!! Then i book online and it was 110$ !!! I couldn’t believe him!

When our flight finally arrived in Las Vegas and we were able to get our luggage, we made our way to the Enterprise pick up location, ONLY TO FIND THAT THE LOCATION WAS CLOSED. We had to scramble, make another reservation with Enterprise, settle for a lesser car (but it was still nice) and then pay a taxi to shuttle us, with luggage, to a different Enterprise Car Rental location. Needless to say, I need Kayak to reimburse me for the reservation because a participating vendor of Kayak never communicated with us that there location closes by noon on Saturday in a city that doesn’t begin to come alive until noon ore 1:00. Please confirm as soon as the refund has processed.

I would recommend a much clearer description of where the car is picked up and dropped off. In Vegas the rental car desk and vehicles were parked at the airport which is what I thought. However, Sixt is NOT on site in Salt Lake. That was a big issue and was not clear when I booked. I might have chose a different rental company if I’d known this. Also, since we were renting for 6 weeks this added extra taxes and a two invoice system that was not invoiced properly. Basically, the car was great but the admin side was not. Trying to speak to someone live on the phone to correct the incorrect invoicing was frustrating and took hours. There was an employee in Salt Lake I wanted to mention (The Austin) who went out of his way to help us. He explained the two invoice system, apologized for the confusion since we had driven all the way to the airport to be told it was offsite. He then drove us to our airport hotel since we didn’t have a way to get there. We dropped off the car the day before our flight and were planning to use the hotel shuttle to get us back/forth to the hotel. The Sixt drop off is down the interstate from the airport so it was an issue.

Pickup was great, drop-off went well too.. But the next day they emailed me and tried to make me take responsibility for a scratch that wasn't there at drop-off. I stayed for the entire checkout and confirmed with the employee that everything was in great condition and there was no damage. Sixt site was very deceptive. Won't use again.

The first electric vehicle I was given was Not charged. The Avis staff quickly exchanged my vehicle, to their credit. However, using an electric vehicle for my travel was awful and delayed my trip, because I was forced to wait for the vehicle(several times) to Charge. Along with the vehicle being dirty and (seemingly) unkempt, I resolve to never use electric vehicles and I'm considering never trusting Avis for my rental needs again. Thank you.

It was very good. The staff was friendly and helpful, the car exceeded my expectations, and the pick-up/drop-off was a breeze. Maybe the only thing that could be improved a little is the drop off instructions: not knowing Las Vegas well, it was a bit difficult to find the correct road and parking garage to return the car.

I paid for a mid-size SUV, they told me I was getting a mid-size SUV, and in the garage they had a Toyota Corolla Cross waiting which is a small or extra small SUV depending on where you look. It was definitely smaller than what I reserved and thought I paid for, but I did not have the time to go argue the point. It was clean, but I was rented less than what I reserved. I made it work though.

I’m currently trying to have the charges to my credit card refunded. I used a card that is only digital and they refused to accept it since they don’t have card machines that take chip/tap payments. As of now I have paid twice. The employee was rude and not helpful with understanding their odd pick up process. I’ve never had to go out into the lot and pick a car I wanted and just jump in and drive off. It was easy but confusing and had to get someone from the car return area to assist me. The car was not in the best condition as far as cleanliness. The interior of the windshield was dirty with smudges and I ended up going to a car wash. Normally I would just clean the windshield myself but as a traveler the cost of winded, towels and the fact that most of it would be wasted was just as cost effective as a basic car wash. Knowing how this works now I would use fox again but I will not accept another car that had visibility issues from a dirty windshield. If customer service was good and the process explained thoroughly it would have been a much better experience. As of now I’d give it a 2 out of 5 ….. you get what you pay for.

I was not not advised at time of booking that 3rd party liability insurance would not be acceptable and purchasing their coverage would be required. To me that is clearly a tactic to advertise a low price to rope a customer in, only to surprise them at pick up time with an additional charge when it’s too late to choose another company. When I asked the desk agent how I would have known this charge would be required I was told “it’s in the fine print”. Not a great response. I kept the booking because I needed the car and didn’t have time to go look for another option. And to be fair, even with the bump in cost it was still a competitive price compared to other agencies. The car was older and dirty. The interior was reasonably clean but the exterior was covered in dirt and dust. But it drove ok so it fulfilled the most basic of reasons I got the car, but it was the bare minimum so I got what I paid for, I suppose. I will not likely use them again unless I am desperate.

Advantage rental need to clean and maintain their vehicles. The car I rented had bald tires at the wear mark. I had to get a different vehicle and made the change before I left a lot. They try to upsell you on insurance, tire insurance, and windshield insurance no good. Other than that I got a great deal for a rental vehicle. Thank you

The whole shuttle situation is crazy. We had no idea that the rental office was right across the street. Had we known, we wouldn't have had to wait around for a shuttle that never picked up. We wouldn't have had to blow $50+ on rideshares to get to the rental office the next morning. We also wouldn't have had to waste 3 hours or more on back and forth phone conversations to fix our issues with miscommunication. The employees were amazing though.

Unknown that Ace was considered an “offsite” rental. Shuttle service was convenient but it was a two shuttle service from the hotel we stayed at. Long wait to pickup, lots of people at desks just a detriment to customers to your success. Check out agent very professional and helpful. Car checkout and checkin staff were cheerful and pleasant.

The pick up is awful! Could not find the place to pick up and no one knew where to find Hertz in the Hotel. There was only one sign and then there was only one guy working and they just hand you keys and tell you where to go find the car. My car had trash in it and was obviously interior not wiped down , black smudges all over from previous user.

Had to book another from a different location paying more for it and the cost of taxi to get to the new rental location. Totally unethical . Wasted my time and money. Have raised a compliant and will demand answers to why this could happen so others don’t have to face the same. For the record this was Hertz at the downtown Las Vegas location.

I reserved a Polestar and after one hour at the rental desk, finally I got a Kia Niro, which is obviously a downgrade. Since we were planning a longer trip, we wouldn’t have had a chance with the Niro. Luckily, the next day Hertz was very kind and allowed us switch to the car with a different category

This is a complete scam. When booking with Kayak, they tell you unlimited miles and give you a set price. Once you arrive to pick up the car, the agreement you paid for is completely different. The unlimited miles is changed to 150 miles a day unless if you agree to pay an additional $25 a day, in addition to what you already paid. The car was horrible. It had a giant dent on side of the car, which the employee refused to mark down, insisting the car had no damage. I had to demand that they mark the damage before I left with the car after showing them a video from the parking lot. The car also had extremely used tires that were completely stripped, so it was 100% smooth and extremely dangerous to drive. Somehow a car that was booked at $22 a day turned into well over $50 a day. Please take your money to enterprise or any other reputable rental car business. I would give this company 0 stars if possible.

There were soo many hoops to jump through as an international renter which were never detailed upon booking. I did not have a US telephone number which meant that they couldn’t send me a verification text message. They insisted I walk to a gas station and buy a SIM card which is totally unacceptable. I ended up buying an eSIM with a digital US phone number only to then be told it won’t work. I cancelled my booking there and then but am still yet to receive my refund a week later.

$500 deposit on credit card required. Only allowed to go to specific states. Was not aware of either of these when making booking. Facility was dirty and run down. Chipped, dirty tile, sloppy paint job. Customer service was poor. Employee was difficult to understand because he was speaking so quickly. Had to ask him to repeat himself 3-4 times during the basic conversation. I selected “rental agency’s choice” for my car. They told me I would be in a minivan then tried to upsell me to a Nissan versa. I declined. They gave me the keys and sent me outside without telling me where the car was. Told me to hit the lock button and find it myself. Went looking for my mini van. There wasn’t one in the parking lot. Came back inside and the employee pointed towards the corner of the lot where I saw a versa. At this point I realized they’d given me a versa and never had a mini van available. It had only been offered in an attempt to upsell. The car had scrapes on the bumper. It smelled like cigarette smoke and the windshield was visibility dirty. They also sent an extremely confusing series of charges and invoices after I returned the rental. Ended up having to pay $90 for gas. It also appeared I’d been charged $400 but they were actually returning the deposit. Got two separate charges for the gas so maybe they charged me twice. I tried calling them multiple times but their automated line say to email. I emailed this morning and haven’t heard back yet. I will not be renting from this agency again. They were the cheapest but everything about it felt very sketchy and unprofessional. I’ll pay 20% more to avoid dealing with this company again. I was especially nervous about renting a car that came with scratches and a cigarette smoke smell because I didn’t want to be charged for the prior renter’s infraction. The bigger agencies would never send a car out like that.

Customer service was ok even though she would continually stop to be on her cell phone. The quality of the van was horrible. It was dirty inside and out. Windshield had streaks and a film on the inside that we couldn't see through at times in certain light. Sooooo DIRTY!!! And the gas tank was empty. We told customer service and they said there was a gas station just up the street and that we should be ok. They didn't even come out to verify. Which means they knew the condition of the Van. We had to immediately stop, fill up the tank and clean the van windows and seats and run it through the car wash. The van also smelled of marijuana. DISGUSTING! We have never had this kind of experience with any of our rentals with other companies.

Pick up was slow because they only had one employee working but she worked hard to get the job done quickly, was professional and the process was smooth. Car was ready and cooled off waiting for us - since it was 111 out that was really appreciated! Drop off after hours was easy and we simply walked across the street to catch the free shuttle to the airport terminal. Great value for the money - I rented a full size suv for the price of the compact with the competitors. I’d rent from them again!

Renting a car and driving in Las Vegas

It’s a great way to see the Strip and beyond, with a little planning

The Las Vegas resort corridor couldn’t be more convenient. Hotels are packed together on or not far away from a single four-mile-long boulevard, there’s a convenient Monorail and tons of rideshares and cabs, and it’s all just minutes from the city’s international airport. If you’re coming to Las Vegas and never intend to leave the Strip, renting a car isn’t necessary. But if you want to explore some of the surrounding attractions - Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, Hoover Dam, Valley of Fire - renting a car is a great idea, if you do it right.

If it’s your first time traveling to Las Vegas, if you look out your airplane window at the Las Vegas Strip, you might be stunned at how small it is - at least in comparison with all the mountains and desert around it. You can drive to the nation’s first and largest National Recreation Area, Lake Mead, in under an hour. The first National Park Service monument dedicated to Ice Age fossil preservation, Tule Springs, is just 30 minutes north of the resorts. Red Rock and Valley of Fire are both easy drives, too, and more and more people are visiting Las Vegas for outdoor sports. You can get to many of these places on organized tours that will pick you up right at your hotel. But if you want to keep your own schedule, and even see multiple places in a day, you’ll want to rent a car.

Licensing and mandatory paperwork to rent a car in Las Vegas

Drivers from the US, US territories and Canada need a valid driver’s license and a credit card to rent in Las Vegas. The license needs to be valid for the whole period of your rental and can’t be a digital license. International visitors coming from non-English-speaking countries whose languages are written in the Latin alphabet (like Spanish, German, and Italian) should carry an International Driver’s Permit along with their license. Travelers whose licenses are printed in a non-Latin-based alphabet must carry an IDP for translation along with their license. But it’s important to note that car companies won’t rent to you with only an IDP, since it’s not a substitute.

Types of cars available for rent in Las Vegas

There's no better place than Las Vegas to rent an outrageous car. Drive it around the 12-mile loop inside Red Rock to experience the scenery. Just don't break the speed limit.

Rental prices have historically been relatively low in Vegas since the market for rentals is huge and competitive. All the major rental companies are here, as well as smaller regional players. Typically, SUVs are popular, so expect to pay a premium, if you can find them. If you want to get behind the wheel of your dream car, Las Vegas is your city. Multiple car rental agencies rent exotic cars like McLarens, Ferraris, and Lamborghinis in town, and you can even rent a Rolls Royce Cullinan (the SUV version of the Phantom). Many will drop off your ride at your hotel; some national agencies rent exotics right from the airport; and some will rent to you for as few as four hours—just long enough to impress a date.

Where to rent a car in Las Vegas Airport

If you’re budget-minded, choosing where to rent a car in Las Vegas may require a little math. On the one hand, there’s a huge, dedicated car rental building just a couple of miles from the airport served by free shuttles and it’s open 24/7. Its rates are often lower than anything you can rent from your hotel. Here’s the catch: You’ll pay airport-specific fees like a concession recovery fee and customer facility charge, and that’s on top of the 10% state government surcharge, sales tax for car rentals of over 8%, an additional 2% Clark County rental tax and a flat $4 per day consumer facility charge. You can get out of the state government charge and facility charge by going off-property – but your daily rates might be higher. The fees and surcharges in casinos can be even higher, without the competitive airport rates.

Driving your Las Vegas rental car out of state

Most rental car companies don’t restrict driving across state lines, and some will impose a one-way fee if you’re dropping off in another state. Still, check car companies’ policies on rentals. For instance, some companies have territorial restrictions and allow you to take the car only to Arizona, California, and Utah.

What to know about car insurance in Las Vegas

You should always carry ample insurance, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you need to buy it from car rental agencies. Rental car companies do provide minimum required liability coverage of $25,000 in bodily injury and $20,000 in property damage coverage. But if you already carry a car insurance policy with collision or comprehensive coverage (which pays to replace or repair your rental car) or higher liability than Nevada’s minimum, that will cover you in a rental car. You might also already have coverage through the credit card you used to book the car, health insurance, travel insurance, a personal injury policy, home insurance or an umbrella policy.

It pays to look at your own coverage before you get to the rental counter. Rental agencies sell collision or loss damage waivers, which can be a good idea if you don’t have a credit card with rental car coverage, or even if you have it through your car insurance but don’t want your premium to rise if you’ve caused an accident. Like the majority of states, Nevada is a fault state, which means the at-fault driver picks up the tab.

Parking your rental car in Las Vegas

Hotel casinos have toyed with charging for parking over the years, adding it and then taking away charges when guests complained. Unlike the good old days when even valet parking was free, most hotels now charge for it – some up to $40. Some hotels provide free parking for loyal guests with a player card. In other words, it’s a mixed bag and charges seem to change on a dime. It’s best to check with your hotel directly before you arrive. Off the Strip, parking is plentiful and generally free.

Fuel and gas stations in Las Vegas

Top off your tank strategically

Las Vegas car rental agencies aren't unique in charging astronomical fuel prices to those who don't return with a full tank. Refuel in a less expensive location that's under 10 miles from the return and keep your receipt.

Nevada and all the states near and touching the West Coast have some of the highest fuel prices in the country, and there’s no remedy for that except renting a fuel-efficient, smaller car. However, as in most tourist-heavy cities, you’re likely to find the lowest prices away from the resort corridor and in residential neighborhoods. You can save on gas if you’re a member of big box stores like Costco and Sam’s Club, which discount their fuel for cardholders.

When to get a rental car in Las Vegas

The rental car industry, like the hotel industry, uses dynamic rental pricing; in other words, on holidays, during a huge convention or trade show, or other event, prices will almost inevitably skyrocket. So, just like for hotels, you might want to look at the city’s convention calendar while you’re planning your trip, especially if your dates are flexible.
