How Tumbleweed Addresses EMF Sensitivities
Use of Shielded Electrical Wiring: We use metal-clad (MC) wiring instead of non-metallic (NM) wiring, such as Romex, to reduce electric field EMFs within walls. MC wiring helps to contain electric fields and reduces exposure, particularly in sleeping areas, which is crucial for people sensitive to EMFs.
Minimizing Magnetic Field Sources: We carefully position electrical components, such as electrical panels, away from areas where occupants spend significant amounts of time, such as beds and sitting areas. We also ensure that appliances like cooktops are selected and installed in a manner that minimizes magnetic field emissions.
Hardwired Internet Connections: To eliminate radio frequency (RF) EMFs from Wi-Fi, we provide hardwired Ethernet connections throughout the home. This allows occupants to access the internet and communicate digitally without relying on wireless signals.
Reduction of Dirty Electricity: We focus on minimizing “dirty electricity,” which refers to high-frequency voltage transients on electrical wiring. This is achieved by avoiding the use of devices that generate dirty electricity, such as certain types of dimmer switches and energy-efficient motors, and by installing plug-in filters where necessary.
Shielding Techniques for Windows and Walls: To reduce RF exposure from external sources, such as cell towers, we use materials and designs that provide natural shielding such as low-E window coatings that block RF signals.
Safe Placement of Electronics and Appliances: We strategically place electrical devices and appliances away from areas where occupants sleep or spend significant time. For example, we ensure that the magnetic fields generated by refrigerators, HVAC systems, or transformers do not intrude into living spaces.
Comprehensive Approach to Low VOC
Low VOC Materials Throughout: We carefully select low VOC materials for every part of the home. This includes the wood used for subfloors, flooring, stairs, and walls. By choosing materials that emit fewer harmful chemicals, we help keep your indoor air clean and safe.
No Glue Policy: To further reduce VOC emissions, we avoid using any glues in our construction process. Instead, we screw or nail everything together, ensuring a strong, durable build without the added toxins.
Custom Kitchen Cabinets: Most commercially available kitchen cabinets are treated with high VOC adhesives and finishes. To counter this, we source oak box kitchen cabinets that don’t use toxic glues. We also leave them unstained, giving you the freedom to choose a finish that suits your taste and meets your health standards.
Natural Interior Finishes: Inside our tiny homes, we finish all the walls with low VOC pine wood, which doesn’t require any paint or sealant, offering a natural, beautiful finish that’s also safe for indoor air quality. For countertops, which do require a sealant, we use natural oils to seal them, ensuring a non-toxic, eco-friendly finish.
Exterior Finishes: The exterior of our homes is either painted with low VOC paint or finished with a low VOC stain, especially if the home features natural wood siding. This ensures that even the outside of your home is contributing to a healthier environment.
Reverse Osmosis Water Filtration: To ensure clean and safe drinking water, we install a reverse osmosis water filtration system for the kitchen sink, giving you peace of mind with high-quality water purification.
Building a Faraday Cage in Your Tiny Home
Aluminum Interior Liner: We apply an aluminum liner to the entire interior of your tiny home. Aluminum is a highly conductive material that effectively blocks EMFs. Every seam is meticulously sealed with aluminum tape, ensuring complete coverage without gaps in protection.
Low-E Window Coatings: We incorporate low-emissivity (low-E) window coatings that block radio frequency (RF) signals. These windows reflect EMFs away from your home while maintaining energy efficiency and natural light.
Steel Exterior Door: To ensure the integrity of the Faraday cage, we install a steel exterior door, further enhancing the protective barrier and keeping your home shielded from outside electromagnetic radiation.
Radiant Cooktop: For cooking, we offer radiant cooktops, which produce fewer EMFs compared to traditional electric stoves. This allows you to prepare meals in an environment with minimal electromagnetic interference.
