Plant description
The rosette-like shape is formed by narrow, pinnate sterile fronds that spread semi-horizontally, creating a neat, tufted appearance. Taller, erect fertile fronds emerge during the growing season, turning green before withering and curling into attractive brown skeletons once they have released their spores.
Found naturally in temperate forests and moors, including parts of the UK, this fern thrives in lime-free, moist soil. Ideal for woodland gardens, it complements other shade-loving plants.
Blechnum spicant grows to around 50cm tall and is a hardy, low-maintenance choice for adding texture and visual interest to shaded spots.
