About the author

Dr Philippa Kaye is a GP, author and media medic and describes herself as a rather irritating cliche in that she really did always want to be a doctor apart from a very brief spell of aspiring to be a ballerina. She went to medical school at Downing College, Cambridge and then Guy's, King's and St Thomas' medical school before training to be a GP. She believes that one of the core medical skills is being able to translate 'medicalese' into English and uses this skill in her media work, books and in her regular appearances on the sofas of daytime TV and as the resident GP on Sky News Breakfast. She has a particular interest in women's, children's and sexual health and is an ambassador for the charity Wellbeing of Women as well as being a women's health campaigner.
Dr Philippa Kaye was once optimistically measured at 5ft and 3/4 of an inch. That 3/4 of an inch (which may or may not actually be present) is very important to her and should not be forgotten'

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 28 March 2023Every woman should read this book. It is full of warm, friendly and medically-proven advice on how to support our breast health and improve our wellbeing. Absolutely excellent.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 21 April 2023Got this as I wasn't sure what sort of book it would be but figured it would be interesting to read for either me or my Mrs. She said most of it contained information she knew or "very small survey groups" to get statistics for things.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 21 April 2023This book is interesting and informative and very well written for anybody worried about breast cancer it is full of vital information
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 23 April 2023Thought this was an incredibly informative and fascinating book about breasts, containing information that every woman from girl to OAP would find useful. It's written in an easy to read style - where you could read the book from beginning to end and be completely fascinated by the information you discover, or just read the chapters that are currently relevant to you.
Split into 9 sections/chapters - 1 Breasts are for...; 2 Anatomy and everyday maintenance; 3 During puberty; 4 After puberty; 5 Pregnancy and breastfeeding; 6 Menopause and beyond; 7 When things go wrong; 8 Breast cancer; 9 Cosmetic surgery. The book concludes with an epilogue, bibliography and index.
This is being sold under the Body Literacy Library banner, which makes you think there are lots of other books in the series. However, at the moment - Breasts seems to be the first book in the series. For anyone like me who was interested in more of the Body Literacy books the next book seems to be Gut - An Owner's Guide by Austin Chiang, currently scheduled for a December 2023 release.
Overall - loved this book.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 22 April 2023In the age of the internet where we have a wealth of information available at our literal fingertips, it would be easy to dismiss the necessity of a book about breasts. Unfortunately breasts, their functions and health, are still considered a taboo subject by many. So having factual and non-judgemental information available in a handy tome is invaluable.
The book is a little larger than A5, square bound and hard covered. It's also available on Kindle and as an audiobook. The print is clear, if a little small, with simple clear stylised illustrations. Everything is laid out well and easy to understand. Making it easy to quickly reference. The book is divided into nine main chapters. The opening chapter explores function, evolution, historic and sociological views on breasts. It's quite concise but touches upon a number of subjects no covered in the bulk of the book. The next five chapters look at anatomy and development. Covering a wealth of topics that you will encounter throughout life. Including puberty, shape and size, bra fitment, checks, pregnancy and breastfeeding, and the menopause. Chapters seven and eight focus on health, with chapter eight dedicated to cancer. These include lots of information about signs and symptoms, and treatments and procedures. The final chapter looks at and answers questions about surgery, including enlargement, reduction and reconstructive.
You could be forgiven for expecting a book like this read like a text book. Surprisingly the writing is genuinely engaging. Imparting knowledge in a detailed but easy to understand manner throughout. The book reads well as a whole, or simply as a reference. At no point does it feel like the writer is being judgemental. Even about commonly divisive subjects, instead presenting facts and dispelling myths. There is some repetition across the chapters. Though I feel this is necessary due to the nature of the book to make access to information quicker.
It could be said that Breasts: An owner's guide is essential reading for all women. It is filled with loads of essential information from bras to health. But I would go one further and say it's an essential read for all. As a man I am a son of a mother, a husband to a wife, and father to a daughter. Understanding their health is every bit as important as my own.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 17 May 2023I initially ordered this thinking it was mainly for my partner and something that may help my daughter as she grows up. In that respect it is perfect, but what I didn't expect was how much I as a partner and a father would learn from this. Honestly in hindsight I thought I knew all I needed to know, but I now have a completely fresh appreciation and understanding. I like many others would strongly recommend this book for everyone and especially for those Dads with daughters growing up. as I think this will help answer questions that I would previously had to brush off or responded with 'speak to your mum'. now I hope to be able to help and at the least sit down with this book or other appropriate material and talk through concerns or questions.
